Dyson V12 Detect Slim
The Dyson to buy if you found the V15 too heavy or too dear. You lose bin size, not cleaning power.
Price range: $$$
Check Latest Price on AmazonThe Dyson V15 Detect gets the headlines, but for a lot of homes the V12 Detect Slim is the smarter buy. It carries the two features that actually change how you clean — the green laser and the particle counter — in a body that weighs about a kilo less. After several weeks alternating it with the V15, the V12 is the one we reached for on stairs and quick tidy-ups.
Design and Weight
At roughly 2.2 kg (4.9 lb), the “Slim” name is earned. It’s not as feather-light as the Levoit LVAC-200, but it’s a real step down from the V15, and you feel it most when cleaning above shoulder height or carrying it up a flight of stairs. The balance is classic Dyson — motor and battery in the hand — so it never feels front-heavy.
Like every Dyson stick it uses the squeeze-trigger power control. No latch, so on a long clean your finger knows about it. If that’s a deal-breaker, the Shark and Samsung alternatives use a button instead.
Suction Performance
This is where the V12 refuses to feel like the cheaper model. The green laser on the Fluffy Optic head rakes across hard floors and lights up dust you’d otherwise miss — identical in practice to the V15’s. On hard floors it’s superb.
On carpet the V12 has a smaller motor than the V15, and on deep pile you can tell: it’s very good rather than class-leading. For hard floors and low-to-medium carpet — most homes — the difference is academic. The LCD still counts and sizes particles, so you get the same satisfying “the number hit zero, it’s done” feedback.
Battery Life
Dyson quotes up to 60 minutes. Realistically, expect the high-30s to low-40s in Auto on hard floors, less on carpet, and a short sprint in Boost. That covers a typical two-to-three-bed home on one charge. The battery clicks in but isn’t designed for hot-swapping — if you need to clean a big house in one go without stopping, the dual-battery LG CordZero A9 is built for exactly that. Our battery life guide explains what shortens runtime.
Maintenance
Point-and-shoot bin emptying, a washable filter, and Dyson’s anti-tangle conical brush bar that sheds hair instead of wrapping it. The bin is smaller than the V15’s, which is the main day-to-day compromise — larger homes will empty it mid-clean. Budget the usual ten minutes a month for filter washing per our maintenance guide.
Verdict
If you want a Dyson and the V15 felt heavy in the shop or heavy on the wallet, buy the V12 Detect Slim. You keep the laser, the sensor and the hard-floor brilliance, and you give up bin size and a little carpet muscle. For most homes that’s a trade worth making.
What We Liked
- Most of the V15's clever tech in a vacuum that's noticeably lighter to hold
- Green laser dust head is just as effective as the flagship's
- LCD particle counter genuinely tells you when a floor is clean
- Around 2.2 kg makes overhead and stairs work far less tiring
What Could Be Better
- Smaller bin than the V15 — more trips to the bin in a big home
- Still a premium price for a cordless
- Single click-in battery, so no swapping for extra runtime
